ACADEMIC RESOURCES

  • UT - Austin's Advertising World - The ultimate marketing communications directory, for professionals, academics and students of advertising, public relations, direct marketing and related disciplines. It boasts the most extensive collection of advertising-related links on the web. A great resource!

  • Duke University - John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising and Marketing History - This site is a resource for the study of sales, advertising and marketing.  The Emergence of Advertising in America: 1850 - 1920 (EAA) presents over 9,000 images, with database information, relating to the early history of advertising in the United States. The materials, drawn from the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke University, provide a significant and informative perspective on the early evolution of this most ubiquitous feature of modern American business and culture. The site also contains the Ad*Access Project, which presents images and database information for over 7,000 U.S. and Canadian print advertisements. Ad*Access concentrates on five main subject areas: Radio, Television, Transportation, Beauty and Hygiene, and World War II, providing a coherent view of a number of major campaigns and companies through preserved images. The Medicine and Madison Avenue project explores the complex relationships between modern medicine and modern advertising.

  • Michigan State University: Broad Master of Science in Marketing Research - Very few universities in the United States offer Master of Science in Marketing Research graduate degrees. The Broad Master of Science in Marketing Research is a specialized, one-year program which provides a graduate-level degree for people who want to build or accelerate their careers in marketing research.

  • University of Illinois Communications Library - The library supports the instructional and research programs of the UIUC College of Communications, including the Department of Advertising, the Department of Journalism, and the Institute of Communications Research. Its collections contain over 16,000 volumes of books, journals, newspapers, as well as materials in other formats, on advertising, journalism, media studies, radio and television broadcasting, telecommunications, popular culture, polling and public opinion.  The Communications Library’s collections include the D’Arcy and Woodward collections of historical advertisements, the Stanley F. Cohen Collection of clippings and documents related to his tenure as Washington editor of Advertising Age and the Fund for Investigative Journalism Collection.

  • Masters in Advertising - For students interested in pursuing an advanced degree in Advertising and Marketing, a comprehensive listing of the leading institutions which offer those degrees.

  • RITIM - Research Institute for Telecommunications and Information Marketing - RITIM conducts and publishes research on the marketing, behavioral, organizational, and strategic aspects of telecommunications and information technology industries. It is part of a growing family of research centers based at the University of Rhode Island' s College of Business Administration.

  • Quirk's Marketing Research Review - Like their printed magazine, the web site is designed to be a one-stop source of information on marketing research - everything from case studies of successful research projects and job postings, to comprehensive directories of research providers.

  • YAHOO! ADVERTISING - Offers exclusive events to provide insights on key advertising issues. View articles, editorials, news, webcasts, photos and research.

  • Advertising Educational Foundation (AEF)  - The industry's clearinghouse, repository and distribution force for educational information and materials to improve the perception and understanding of the social and economic role of advertising.

  • The Advertising Research Foundation (ARF) - Non-profit corporate-membership association which is one of the leading organizations in the field of advertising research. The principal mission of the ARF is to improve the practice of advertising, marketing and media research in pursuit of more effective marketing and advertising communications. Publishes the Journal of Advertising Research.

  • American Academy of Advertising (AAA) - Organization of advertising scholars and professionals with an interest in advertising and advertising education. The Academy fosters research which is relevant to the field and provides a forum for the exchange of ideas among its members. Publishes the Journal of Advertising.

  • American Advertising Federation (AAF) - "The Unifying Voice for Advertising." Professional advertising organization that binds the mutual interests of corporate advertisers, agencies, media companies, suppliers and academia.

  • American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA) - National trade association representing the advertising agency business in the U.S.

  • American Marketing Association (AMA)  - Dedicated to serving the educational and professional needs of marketing executives.

  • Association of National Advertisers (ANA) - Industry's premier marketing and advertising trade association, exclusively dedicated to serving the interests of corporations that advertise and market their products and services in the U.S.

  • Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) - IAB events, news, membership information and research about the use and effectiveness of advertising on the Internet.

  • International Advertising Association (IAA) - The only global partnership of advertisers, agencies, the media and related services.

  • The Eisner American Advertising Museum - Dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of advertising in America and beyond. 

  • The Evolution of Billboard Marketing - An interesting overview on the history and current state of billboard advertising, with links to additional resources.

  • Fifty Years of Coca-Cola Television Advertisements - Highlights from the Motion Picture Archives at the Library of Congress. Presents a variety of television commercials, never-broadcast outtakes and experimental footage reflecting the historical development of television advertising for a major commercial product.   • Gaslight Archives - A for-profit organization that maintains one of the largest collections of authentic magazine advertisements in the world. With well over a million vintage ads in their library, they probably have the historical ads you are looking for. 

  • N.W. Ayer Collection, Smithsonian Institute - The N.W. Ayer Advertising Agency Records include business records but consist primarily of print advertising created for thousands of clients between 1869 and 1996.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Ad Council -Public service messages for 65 years.

  • Ad Critic - Where you can get access to virtually any ad you see on television. You can also vote, discuss and comment  on the ads, including ones from previous years' Super Bowls.

  • Adsoftheworld - Advertising archive and forum discussing great advertising work worldwide.

  • The Better Business Bureau's National Advertising Division Site (NAD) - Their mission is to review national advertising for truthfulness and accuracy and foster public confidence in the credibility of advertising. Policy and procedures for NAD are established by the National Advertising Review Council.

  • Copyright Website - Copyright information for digital, visual and audio documents.

  • Federal Trade Commission - The website of the federal government agency responsible for regulating advertising and advertising practices.

  • SuperBowl-Ads.com - The latest information on those wonderful Super Bowl commercials. Lots of links to related articles on Super Bowl advertising.

  • Toyadz.com - A colorful archive of vintage toy advertisements from the '60s to the '80s.

  • Web Digest for Marketers - Web Digest for Marketers - This website features a weekly newsletter of marketing-related sites, as well as Larry Chase's web digest for Marketers Resource Directory. Subscriptions to the newsletter are free.

  • The World Advertising Research Center - Collection of three unique websites which are vital information resources for advertisers, agencies, the media, research companies and academics. 1.
